Microsoft to start force-upgrading Windows 22H2 systems next month

Microsoft upgrade announced that Windows 11 installs reaching the end of support on October 8 will be upgraded to Windows 11 23H2.

This applies to Windows 11 22H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, and SE editions released on September 20, 2022.

Windows 11 21H2 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions will also reach the end of service. On the same day, one year after the Home and Pro editions.

 

Windows Update Will Automatically Initiate Feature Update

“To help keep you protected and productive. Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 11 Home and Pro devices. These devices are not managed by IT departments when they approach the end of servicing.” The company said in a new Microsoft 365 message center entry.

“Moving to Windows 11, version 23H2 ensures your device stays supported and receives essential monthly updates to protect security and ecosystem health.”

Windows 11 23H2 First Made Available for Enterprise Testing

Windows 11 23H2 first became available to Release Preview Insiders in September for enterprise testing. It was officially released in late October as an enablement package.

 

Force-Installing Windows 11 23H2 on Eligible Systems

In February, Microsoft upgrade began force-installing Windows 11 23H2 on eligible systems nearing or already at their end-of-service date.

“Windows 11, version 23H2, also known as the Windows 11 2023 Update, is now entering a new rollout phase,” Microsoft stated.

“We are starting to automatically update eligible Windows 11 devices to version 23H2,” the company added.

“This update targets devices that have reached or are about to reach the end of servicing and follows our machine learning-based (ML) training.

 

The Forced Rollout of Windows 11 22H2 Before October 11

The forced rollout began after systems running. Various Windows 11 21H2 editions were updated automatically to Windows 11 22H2 before reaching the end of support on October 11.
